William H. Pike, Sr., 87, of Howland, died Saturday September 27, 2008 at Community Skilled Nursing Center. He was born December 9, 1920 in Warren, the son of Walter J. and Laura A. (Houston) Pike, and had lived in the Warren area his entire life.
He owned and operated Pike Painting Co., where he worked as a painter and paperhanger for several years. He was a member of the Howland Community Church; Old Erie Lodge #3, F.& A.M.; OX-5 Club (experimental aircraft) and volunteered as a Boy Scout Leader taking canoe trips to Hudson Bay. He enjoyed airplanes, camping, and restoring furniture.
A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, Mr. Pike taught celestial navigation and flying during the war and escorted a German Sub back to the U.S. after the war had ended.
Surviving are his children, William H. (Toni) Pike Jr. of Kansas City, KS, Katherine D. Lingenfelter of Austintown, Sharon E. Pike (Chris) Wanca of Kent, OH, Walter E. (Cheryl) Pike of Howland, and Warren R.(Karen) Pike of Howland; nine grandchildren: Navvab (Pellen) McDaniels, Nabil Pike, G. Kristin Lingenfelter, G. Michael Lingenfelter, Zachary Pike, Heather Pike, Joshua Pike, Ashley Pike, and Karina Pike; and two great-grandchildren, Ellington and Sophie McDaniels. Preceding him in death are his wife of 46 years, Katherine M. (Barbe) Pike whom he married November 1, 1941 and who passed away November 4, 1987, his parents, a brother, and a sister, Margaret Pike.
A funeral service will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 4, 2008 at McFarland & Son Funeral Home. Friends may call 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
