William L. Green

William Leroy Green, 90, of Champion, died Friday, June 13, 2008 during an extended recovery period. He was born January 30, 1918, in Warren, the son of Emma Mae (Williams) and Artemis W. Green, and had lived in the Warren area his entire life.

Mr. Green was a January 1936 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School and was the longtime president of the reunion committee. He was a retired patternmaker for the Taylor-Winfield Corp., working there for 33 years. He belonged to the First Church of Christ, Scientist of Warren. He was a 65-year member of Old Erie Lodge #3, serving as both master and recorder (23 years).

He was a loving husband and a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Over the years, he enjoyed such activities as photography, woodworking, genealogy, gardening, archery, bowling, and reading. He was an accomplished artisan in dollhouse furniture-making. He was also an avid historian of early Warren and Champion and took pride in collecting and restoring old pictures of Warren.

Surviving are his wife, Joan (Howell) Green, whom he married August 31, 1951; six children: Meredith (Ethel) McKenzie of Pasadena, California, James (Linda)) Green of Howland, Robert Green of Champion, Nancy Green of Boone, North Carolina, Barbara (William) Hummel of Champion, and Ruth (David) Green-Waite of Sebring, Florida; four grandchildren: Christina (Jake) Gwin, Jenna Green, Alex Hummel, and Eric Hummel; and one great granddaughter: MacKenzie Gwin. Preceding him in death are his parents, three brothers, and three sisters.

A Masonic service followed by a memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at the Howland Community Church. There will be no calling hours. Material contributions may be made to the Champion Fire Department, 139 W Champion St., Warren, OH 44483.
