Virginia Dove Calain

Virginia Dove Calain, 83, of Champion, died Saturday, June 26, 2010 at home. She was born May 3, 1927 in Kedron, W. Va., the daughter of Albert T. and Elsie (Hornbeck) Nethken, and had lived in Trumbull County since 1966, coming from West Virginia.

Mrs. Calain worked as a dental assistant and taught aspiring dental assistants at Choffin Career Center in Youngstown, retiring in 1991. An active member of Champion Christian Church, she also belonged to the Royal Arcanum, the Ohio and Mahoning Retired Teachers associations, and was a life member of the American Dental Assistants Association.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Diane Calain of Lordstown; a granddaughter, Ruth (Brent) Rupnik of Corpus Christi, Tex.; three sisters: Jane (Dick) Helmick of Bazetta, Edith Ossman of Charlotte, N.C., and Rosie (Stanley) Bland of Brunswick, Ohio; and a brother, Weese (Ila) Nethken of Mabie, W. Va. Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband, Robert K. Calain, whom she married December 24, 1946 and who died November 24, 1996; a daughter, Linda Gayle Calain; a grandson, Andrew Keith Calain, who died May 14, 1992; a sister, Jessie Logue; three brothers: Frank, Ralph, and Harrison Nethken; and two half-sisters, Florence Brady and Ruby Combs.

Services are 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 1, 2010 at Champion Christian Church, with Rev. Kenneth Hopkins officiating. Interment will follow at Champion Township Cemetery. Friends may call 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the church. Material contributions may be made to Champion Christian Church, 151 Center St. West, Warren, Ohio 44481.
