Mr. Vernon Richard Perry, 73, of Howland, joined his Lord in Heaven on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 while under the care of Hospice of the Valley. His wife and all of his children were with him as he departed this life.
Vernon was born in Howland March 24, 1938, the son of Ralph and LaVerne (Stein) Perry. He lived his entire life in Trumbull County except 1958-1961 when he served with the U.S. Marine Corps. He worked at Federal Machine & Welding, RMI, and Packard Electric, retiring from the GM division in 1999.
On August 16, 1959, Vernon married his childhood sweetheart, Donna Robison. They were married 52 years, and to this union were born five children: Vernon, Jr. "Tim" and his wife, Julie, of North Canton; Kathy and her husband, Walter Beach, of Amherst; Tammy and her husband, Jimmy Barnes, of Moyock, N.C.; Dale of Mayfield Heights; and Scott and his wife, Lara, of Goshen, Ind.
Vernon was a Boy Scout leader; past-president and treasurer of Ethan Allen Sons of the Revolution; and a 32nd degree Mason of the Scottish Rite. He enjoyed fishing, NASCAR, bowling, gardening, wood-crafts, feeding wild birds, camping, traveling, and visiting casinos. A former member of Cortland Trinity Baptist Church and Bolindale Christian Church, he believed in treating everyone with respect and dignity; he lived his faith.
Besides his wife and children, he is survived by twelve grandchildren: Leslie, Richard, Christopher, Jeremy, Alyssa, Heidi, Justin, Nathan, Amanda, Elizabeth, Foster, and Donnie; five step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Calvin of Niles; and three sisters: Ruth (Ellis) Cozadd of Mentor-on-the-Lake, Beatrice (Adam) Frederick of Howland, and Nora (Durb) Loudin of Ashford, Wash. Preceding him in death are his parents and two brothers, Robert and Ralph, Jr.
The family wishes to thank Dr. William Eddy of Niles, the Hospice House in Poland, and the entire staff of Hospice of the Valley, in particular Diana Koza, R.N.; the crisis nurses; Dennis, his caregiver; Rev. Jay Eastman; and all others who provided Vernon with comfort in his final days.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 25, 2011 at McFarland & Son Funeral Home. An Honor Guard will confer full military honors at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, material contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, Ohio 44512.
