Thomas S Smith, Sr

Thomas S. Smith Sr. of Mineral Ridge passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at 4:52 p.m. in Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Hospital Main Campus. He was 82.

Thomas was born at home on September 26, 1936 in Mineral Ridge, the son of the late Joseph and Mary Ellen Hammell Smith Sr.

He was a 1954 graduate of Mineral Ridge High School. Mr. Smith retired in 1992 after 37 years of employment at Copperweld Steel. His reason for retirement was to babysit and spend time with his grandchildren.

Earlier in life, Tom loved playing basketball, first on his Wednesday night league at the former Washington Middle School in Niles, and then moving the game to his house, where Tom’s friends and sons would play all hours of the day. He loved the outdoors, he enjoyed fishing and hunting, and took pleasure in holding the family record for the largest buck.

He is survived by his wife and love of his life, Mary Ann Price Smith, whom he married May 14, 1960 and spent 58 wonderful years of marriage together; 3 precious sons, Thomas “Steve” Smith Jr. of Centerburg, OH, Tim Smith of Mineral Ridge, and Jeffrey (Cindy) Smith of Warren. His three sons will carry on the “big buck” family tradition; a sister, Mary Hake of Mineral Ridge; 2 brothers, Doug Smith of Orwell and George Smith of Mineral Ridge; 4 grandchildren, Jenna, Caitlin, Jacklynn, and Nathaniel; Thomas is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

In addition to his parents, Thomas was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Smith; a brother Joseph Smith Jr.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 17, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Wm Nicholas Funeral Home & Cremation Services 614 Warren Ave. Niles, OH 44446 with Fr. Richard Murphy of St. Mary’s Church. Calling hours will be in the funeral home two hours prior to the service on Monday.

Entombment will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
