Roy W. Elledge

Roy W. Elledge, 85, of Champion, died Sunday, August 2, 2009 at the Cleveland Clinic. He was born February 14, 1924 in Warren, the son of Frank and Pearl (Foley) Ernst, and had lived in Trumbull County all his life.

A graduate of Champion High School, Mr. Elledge was a Motor Machinist's Mate in the U.S. Navy, taking part in the amphibious landing at Omaha Beach, and building bridges across the Rhine River for General Patton's army during World War II. He belonged to the American Legion Post in Cortland and was a founding member of the Clifford Emery Post in Champion. He also belonged to the Five Points Model A Club, the Champals investment club, and the State Patrol auxiliary. He enjoyed restoring old Fords, fishing, dominoes, cards, and especially his family and friends.

Mr. Elledge retired from the Champion schools as supervisor of maintenance and transportation. Formerly, he and his family had owned several gas stations and Dairy Queen franchises in Champion.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred "Dolly" (Thompson) Elledge, whom he married June 9, 1945; a son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Nancy Elledge of North Hollywood, Calif.; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Martha and Charlie Monus and Lela and Bob Bishop; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grandnephews. Preceding him in death are his parents and his sister.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 8, 2009 at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, with Rev. Ken Hopkins of Champion Christian Church officiating. His urn will be interred at a later date at Champion Township Cemetery, along with full military honors. Friends may call 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday and 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
