Robert S. McGeough, prominent Warren attorney and civic leader, died November 15, 2009 in Warren. A fifty-year member of the bar, he was a long-time partner in the law firm of Hoppe, Frey, Hewitt & Milligan, and for more than thirty years a director of First Federal Savings and Loan Association and First Place Financial Corporation.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, on Aug. 30, 1930, to Edward and Florence (Saunders) McGeough, he graduated from Chardon High School, Duke University and the University of Michigan Law School, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity. He served as a pilot in the United States Navy for four years.
Bob married Janet James, who survives him, on Nov. 23, 1961, in Warren. He is survived by three children, Maureen, of Fairfax, Virginia, Michael (Letitia), of Danville, Virginia, and Molly Ritts (Geoffrey), of Shaker Heights, Ohio, eight grandchildren, and sister Catherine McGeough Whitright of Chardon, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings.
Bob served in numerous civic and professional organizations, including as president of the Buckeye Club of Warren and the Children's Rehabilitation Center, and as head of professional development of the United Way of Trumbull County. He also served on the board of Junior Achievement. Bob was a member of the Trumbull Country Club and the Elks Club. He was an member of the American, Ohio, and Trumbull County and Bar Associations and a former fellow of the Ohio Bar Foundation and the American Bar Foundation. A highly-respected member of the bar and an authority in banking law, Bob was a valued counselor and advisor to many clients over the years, including First Federal Savings and Loan Association and First Place Bank. He served as Chairman of the First Place Foundation. Bob was a former member of the Ohio Supreme Court's Commission on Continuing Legal Education.
In addition to being a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, Bob was an avid golfer, Duke basketball fan and world traveler.
A memorial service will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at First United Methodist Church in Warren, with Rev. Rick Oaks officiating. Friends may call 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, and 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
