Richard "Dick" Brem, 71, 7924 Brookwood NE, Warren, Ohio died at Trumbull Memorial Hospital on February 16, 2005.
He was born in Pittsburgh on March 3, 1933, the son of Sarah Kathryn Fritsch and Francis E. Brem. A well known local artist, Brem was recently named "Best of Show" at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown for "Fall at Falling Water," a three dimensional representation of architect Frank Lloyd Wright's cantilevered concrete and steel masterpiece in southern Pennsylvania. His work has been exhibited at Trumbull Art Gallery, the Nissen Arts and Medicine Gallery at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital, at the Hoyt Institute in New Castle, PA, and Westminster College. A paper sculpture, "The Four Seasons", and photos have been chosen for the cover of the Sprint Phone Book.
Brem retired as Art Director/Vice President of Dick Zdinak Associates of Pittsburgh, and had his own graphics art studio, Brem 3 Design, in Warren. He graduated from Langley High School in Pittsburgh, and attended art classes at Carnegie Mellon University and Ad Art Studio School before joining the U.S. Navy. While serving from 1953 - 1957 as a radio operator, Brem toured Europe and the Caribbean capturing his travels on film. He graduated from Ohio University in 1961 with a BFA from the College of Fine Arts.
He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Warren, serving as a Trustee and a Deacon. He was an avid bicyclist and organized a church cycling group, "The Holy Spokes." He initiated the first annual Church Members Art Show last May.
Brem was a volunteer for Mobile Meals, Trumbull Art Guild, Forum Health Hospice, and Relay for Life. He taught International Folk Dancing and Country Line Dancing for 35 years in Pittsburgh and Warren and performed at the Pittsburgh International Folk Festival.
He is survived by his wife Judy Yoxtheimer Brem, children Neil (Beverly) Brem of Pittsburgh, Kara (Fred) Cervelli of Madison, Ohio, Kiersten Cox of Tampa, Florida, John (Pina) Cox of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Ben (Traci) Cox of Warren, Michigan, brothers, Ralph (Nancy) Brem and David (Kay) Brem of Pittsburgh, Bill (Nancy) Brem of Detroit, Thomas Brem of Chicago, and Harry (Laura) Brem of Arizona, sisters Dr. Toni Brem and Ann Francis Gwinnel of St. Clair Shores, Michigan. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Benjamin and Jenna Cox, Connor, Evan and Hannah Brem, and Alex, Andrew and Brian Cervelli.
His sister, Genevieve Brem Sundo, and his parents preceded him in death.
Calling hours will be at First Baptist Church of Warren (corner of Eastland and Surrey) from 7pm to 9pm on Friday, and a Memorial Service at First Baptist Church at 3pm on Saturday with calling hours one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dick Brem Memorial Fund of First Baptist Church.
