Ray D. McElravy

Ray D. McElravy, 91, formerly of Warren, died Thursday, November 4, 2010 at Shepherd of the Valley in Niles. He was born June 19, 1919 in Armstrong County, Pa., the son of Boyd and Pearl (Himes) McElravy.

A graduate of Warren G. Harding High School, Hiram College, and Kent State University, Mr. McElravy also did post-graduate studies at The Ohio State University. He served as a Gunner's Mate in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. Following the war, he taught in Warren City Schools as a science teacher at Turner Junior High and as a guidance counselor at Warren Western Reserve High School, retiring in 1978.

Following his retirement, Ray and Betty moved to Brooksville, Fla., where they lived until returning to Trumbull County in 2005.

A lifetime member of the Ohio Education Association, the National Education Association, and the National Science Teachers Association, he also enjoyed golf, bowling, and watching Westerns and war movies.

Surviving are his wife, Betty (Youngberg) McElravy, whom he met at a USO dance and whom he married October 30, 1943; two children: Jeff (Phyllis) McElravy of Cincinnati and Kay (Paul) Rader of Warren; four grandchildren: Jeff Jr. and Beth McElravy, and Christopher and Amber Rader; three great-grandchildren: Anthony and Summer Pumphrey and Kaleigh Kascsak; and a brother, Boyd McElravy and his companion, Janet Griffith, of Duquesne, Pa. Preceding him in death are his parents and a sister, Kathryn Flynn.
