Phillips K. Daugherty

Phillips K. Daugherty, Sr. 93, formerly of Warren, died Thursday, February 28, 2008 at Laurel Lake Retirement Community in Hudson. He was born June 2, 1914 in Warren, the son of Harold K. and Winifred (Phillips) Daugherty.

Mr. Daugherty was a 1932 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School and attended Youngstown State University and Denison University. He retired in 1978 as a store manager and buyer for the May Company. A lifelong member of First Baptist Church, he served the church in many capacities, including moderator, trustee, building committee member, and choir director. He was active in the Warren Rotary Club, the Warren Chamber of Commerce, and the YMCA. He enjoyed all music, and sang tenor in a barbershop quartet known as the "Song Vendors", along with his brothers-in-law Ben and Bill Harley and Max Jacobs. The "Song Vendors" were well-renown locally and won many prizes for their performances.

Surviving are his wife, Alice Harley Genger Daugherty, whom he married in 1978; a daughter, Sue Ann (Gary) Drean of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.; a son, Phillips K. Daugherty, Jr. of Sarasota, Fla.; a stepson, David (Nancy) Genger of Conneaut; four grandchildren: Christopher and Daniel Daugherty, and David Jr. (Vanessa) and Mark Genger; three great-grandchildren: Melissa, Nicole, and Allyson Genger; and a brother, David M. Daugherty of Williamsburg, Va. Preceding him in death are his parents; his first wife, Minta L. (Conners) Daugherty, whom he married in 1937 and who died in 1975; a sister, Winifred Wing; and a brother, Roger Daugherty.

Services will be 12:00 noon Monday, March 3, 2008 in the chapel of Oakwood Cemetery, 860 Niles Rd. S.E., Warren, Ohio 44483, with Rev. Matthew M. Thomas of First Baptist Church officiating. Interment at Oakwood Cemetery will follow. Material contributions may be made to the Barbershop Harmony Society, Attention: Harmony Foundation, 110 7th Ave. North, Nashville, Tenn. 37203-3724.
