Mary Riffle, 93, of Warren, died Monday, May 22, 2006 at Shepherd of the Valley in Howland. She was born August 8, 1912 in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, the daughter of John and Mary Forsek Riffle, moving to the Warren area in 1926.
Mary was employed by Ohio Lamp and then the Ravenna Arsenal during the war years. She moved to Oakland, California in 1945 and worked, until her 1976 retirement, for the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco as the supervisor of currency sorters. It was there she earned the nickname the "Million Dollar Lady." Her hobbies included making dolls and clowns as gifts for churches, charity fund-raisers, and underprivileged children. Mary returned to the Warren area in 2001 and had been a resident of Shepherd of the Valley ever since.
Surviving are five sisters: Victoria Merrifield of Texas, Ann (Edwin) Baker of Howland, Josephine Laakso of North Jackson, Dorothy Williams of Warren, and Pauline Varga of Fredonia, Pa.; a brother, Rudy Riffle of Vienna, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents and four brothers: Joseph, John, Frank, and Charles Riffle.
Services will be 11:00 AM Friday, May 26 at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, with Fr. Donald King of Blessed Sacrament Church officiating. Interment will follow at Pineview Memorial Park. Friends may call 10:00 to 11:00 AM Friday at the funeral home. Material contributions may be made either to Shepherd of the Valley, 4100 North River Rd. N.E., Warren, Ohio 44484, or to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, Ohio 44512.
