WARREN - Mary Flo {Compton} McLain, 88, died Saturday, September 19, 2015 at her residence, following a brief illness. She was born on July 23, 1927 in Moundsville, WV, the only child of the late Henry T. and Florence {Heskett} Compton.
The Compton's moved to Warren in 1939, where Mary Flo attended school and graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in 1945. She attended Ohio Wesleyan University and graduated in 1949 from Bowling Green State University with a B.S. degree and a major in art. During her college years, she was a member of Alpha Delta Phi {Education Fraternity}, Delta Phi Delta {Art Fraternity} and Phi Mu {Social Sorority}. She taught art at Austintown Fitch High School and served as Art Supervisor at Wickliff School. She tutored in Warren City Schools, helping with Head Start.
On June 23, 1951, Miss Compton and David F. McLain were married and moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts. Mrs. McLain continued her interest in art and service all of her life. Returning to Warren {where husband practiced law}, Mrs. McLain served as President of the Trumbull County Bar Auxiliary and helped initiate the Law Week tours of the court house in 1967. Mrs. McLain served as President of the Trumbull Memorial Hospital Womens Auxiliary, Trowel and Hoe Garden Club, and the Art and Drama Club. Mrs. McLain was a founding member in 1958 and the President of the Chip and Putt Women's Golf Association.
Numerous service groups in which she was active include: Mobile Meals, Family Service Board, Rebecca Williams Board, Junior Crafts, Trumbull New Theatre {TNT} Women's Board, March of Dimes, and the United Way. She was a member of Warren's First United Methodist Church and received the I.B. Taylor Award in 1993 for a lifetime of volunteer service to the community.
Mrs. McLain's artistic ability was felt in numerous organizations from the logo she designed for the Trumbull Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary to the etched barrister for the Trumbull County Bar Association and the many program covers she designed and illustrations in watercolor.
In addition to her lifelong interest in art, she enjoyed music, theater, golf, and tennis. She loved life and she was loved ...
Memories of Mary Flo will be carried on by her son, David H. McLain of Warren. She was preceded in death by her husband, David F. McLain; and son, Mark Compton McLain.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, Warren where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Rick Oaks will officiate.
