Mary Basso Hayes, of Niles and formerly of Warren, died 11:57 AM Sunday, January 29, 2006 at Shepherd of the Valley in Niles. She was born February 15, 1917 in Fairchance, Pa., the daughter of Joseph and Maria Sica Basso, and had lived in the Warren area since 1947.
Mary attended California State Teachers College in California, Pa. and graduated from Youngstown College in Elementary Education. She began her teaching career at Gallatin School in Uniontown, Pa., and then taught for 38 years in the Warren City Schools at Roosevelt Elementary School, retiring in 1983. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Warren and a life member of the Trumbull County Retired Teachers Association and the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed traveling and was an avid reader.
Mary is survived and will be sadly missed by her daughter, Mary Lee Lightner and son-in-law John of Niles; her sister Josephine Beck of Howland; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband, Samuel Hayes, whom she married August 4, 1953 and who died June 9, 1989; and six brothers: Michael, Barlow, William, Louis, John, and Anthony Basso.
Services will be 12:00 Noon Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, with Fr. Charles W. Crumbley of St. James Catholic Church officiating. Interment will follow at Crown Hill Burial Park. Friends may call 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, material contributions may be made either to Antonine Sisters Adult Day Care, 2675 N. Lipkey Rd., North Jackson, Ohio 44451, or to Shepherd of the Valley, 1500 McKinley Way, Niles, Ohio 44446.
