Mary Devadan (Leela), 71, of Cortland, died Wednesday, July 4, 2007 at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren. She was born January 25, 1936 in India, the daughter of Mathai K. Mathew and Mary Joseph Mathew, and came to the United States in 1968, becoming a citizen in 1985.
Mrs. Devadan was educated in India and had been a nurse and a nursing tutor before coming to the U.S. She lived in New Jersey and North Dakota before settling in Ohio. In the U.S., she worked as an ICU-CCU nurse, most recently at St. Joseph's Health Center. She had been proud to assist many other nurses from India relocate to the U.S. and Canada.
She was a member of Cortland United Methodist Church and an associate member of First United Methodist Church in Warren. She supported her husband in his years of ministry in several different congregations. She enjoyed traveling, sewing, crocheting, cooking, and liked to entertain people. She liked to listen to traditional church music, especially Bill Gaither. She was a history buff and was especially fond of U.S. history. She loved flowers, gardening, and most of all, her family.
Surviving are her husband, Rev. Yesudas Devadan, whom she married June 13, 1966; three sons: Dr. Phillip S. (Stephanie) Devadan of Bloomingdale, N.J., Mathew S. Devadan and Paul D. (Martha) Devadan, both of Mansfield, Ohio; six grandchildren: Katerina, Nikolai, Andrew, Gabriel, Jasmine, and Prianna Devadan; a sister and brother-in-law, Annamma Mathew and Chacko Mathew; and a brother and sister-in-law, Mathai Mathew and Sophie Mathew. Her parents precede her in death.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 9, 2007 at First United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Rick Oaks, David Vensel, Ignatius David, and Samuel Honnappa officiating. Interment will follow at Crown Hill Burial Park. Friends may call 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday and 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Monday at the church.
