Laverne "Verne" E. Hoehn, 92, of Warren, died Friday, November 25, 2011 at Trumbull Memorial Hospital. He was born October 20, 1919 in Warren, the son of Carl J. and Carrie (Chilton) Hoehn, and had lived in Trumbull County all his life.
A graduate of Warren G. Harding High School, Mr. Hoehn served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. Assigned to the First Battalion, First Marine Division, he was wounded during the Battle of Okinawa and later was awarded the Purple Heart.
After the war, Mr. Hoehn worked as a general foreman for Republic Steel, retiring in 1977 after thirty-one years of employment. He then worked seventeen years in the stockroom of Trumbull Memorial Hospital. A member of Tod Avenue United Methodist Church, BPOE Lodge 295, and American Legion Post 540, he enjoyed playing cards, repairing antique clocks, taking neighborhood children on hikes, and most of all, his family.
Surviving are his wife, Hortense "Terry" A. (Speak) Hoehn, whom he married June 23, 1943; two children: Ralph R. (Carol) Hoehn of Salem, and Valerie (Terry) Taylor of Avon Lake; six grandchildren: Robert and Michael (Susan) Lutz, Julie (Jack) Steele, Jeffrey Hoehn (Ashley) Taylor, Allison (Tim) Fether, and Lauren (Justin) Hutchinson; and eleven great-grandchildren. A sister, Thelma M. Swanson, precedes him in death.
Services are 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 28, 2011 at Tod Avenue United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mark Vincent officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, and 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. Monday at the church.
