Julius L. Bako

Julius L. Bako, 85, of Warren, died Friday, March 6, 2009 at Windsor House of Champion. He was born April 25, 1923 in Niles, the son of John and Anna (Salavari) Bako, and had lived in Trumbull County all his life.

Mr. Bako served as a Coxswain in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Before the war, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps. Later, he worked for U.S. Steel, Niles Republic, and retired from Republic and LTV Steel in 1986 after 38 years of employment. A member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, he sang in the choir, was one of the first lay lectors in the church, and was active in the Holy Name Society and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. A member of the John F. Kennedy High School Boosters, he was part of the JFK football "chain gang" for over 25 years. He was a blood donor for the American Red Cross, and active with USWA Local 1375 for four decades.

Surviving are his six children: Paula (Mike) Craig of Cambridge, Mary Jane Langietti of Roselle, Ill., Thomas (Karen) Bako of Champion, Anne (Jim) Varley of Warren; Judy (Michael) Rounsley of Warren, and William (Annie) Bako of Liberty; thirteen grandchildren: Brian and Aaron Craig, Matt and Chris Langietti, Erika, Kristin, and Brittany Bako, Julie and John Varley, Whitney and Chelsea Rounsley, Nicholas and Anthony Bako; six great-grandchildren: Benjamin, Zachary, Caleb, Eliya, Joel, and Adaya Craig; and two sisters, Kay Sohayda and Ethel Syacsure, both of Niles. Preceding him in death are his parents; his wife, Bernice Evelyn (Ryabik) Bako, whom he married June 21, 1947 and who died July 17, 2002; three sisters: Betty Ferrari, Anna Gogas, and Helen Miller; and three brothers: Joseph, John, and Andrew Bako.

Services are 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 232 Seneca N.E., Warren, Ohio 44481, with Fr. Bernard Schmalzried officiating. Interment will follow at All Souls Cemetery. Military honors will be observed. Friends may call 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at McFarland & Son Funeral Home.
