Julia Kerr Better, age 75, of Warren, Ohio and Siesta Key, Florida, died Sunday, November 14, 2004, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital-Forum Health in Warren, Ohio. She was born October 8, 1929 in Warren, the daughter of the late John N. Kerr and the late Mildred (Biery) Kerr.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Trumbull Country Club, a 25 year member of Trumbull Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary, the Art & Drama Club, and a charter member of the Birthday Group, along with various other charitable organizations.
She graduated from Warren G. Harding High School, the Monticello School for Girls in St. Louis, Mo., and Wittenberg University.
She is survived by her husband Edward F. Better III; a daughter, Susan E. Better of Niles, Ohio; and a son, William E. and wife, Elane M. Better, of Dallas, Texas. She was preceded in death by two brothers, William M. Kerr, who was killed in the Southwest Pacific while serving in the US Marines during World War II, and John E. (Jack) Kerr.
Kerr's Corners (Niles-Mineral Ridge Rd.) was named for her great grandfather Zachariah Kerr, who came to this area and operated a sawmill at Kerr's Corners, and later became the justice of the peace of Weathersfield Township. Her uncle W. Manning Kerr founded the Ohio Corrugating Co. in 1915. Her father John N. Kerr served as president for many years until her brother John E. (Jack) Kerr assumed the reigns of the company. Later, her husband, Edward F. Better III, became president of the company.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 17, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church, 309 North Park Avenue, Warren, phone 330/392-6276, at 1:00 PM. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening 6-8 at The McFarland & Son Funeral Home, 271 N. Park Ave., Warren, phone 330/393-9621, and one hour prior to the service in the Heritage Room at the church. The Rev. Rick Oaks will officiate the funeral, with committal services concluding at the Oakwood Cemetery.
