Joseph K. Horne

SARASOTA, FL - Joseph Kimball Horne, 95, formerly of Poland, OH, died Sunday, March 29, 2015 at The Pines of Sarasota. He was born on June 23, 1919 in Struthers, OH, the son of the late Clair Frank and Phoebe Alice (nee' Gough) Horne.

Joe graduated from Mount Union College in June, 1942, was a member of Phi Kappa Tau social fraternity (Epsilon Chapter) and a member of the Delta Pi Alpha flying fraternity, for which he served as vice-president in his senior year. He married Mary Catharine Pappenhagen on August 26, 1942 in Alliance, OH. After graduation, he was flight instructor for the Naval Reserve of the Civilian Pilot Training Program at the Hinkle Flying School in Youngstown, OH. Joe served in the United States Navy during World War II and was an officer onboard LCS(L)-101 in the western pacific during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. After the war, Joe was the owner of J.K. Horne and Sons in Struthers, OH. Joe and Mary Catharine moved to Sarasota, FL in 1985, where he became a real estate agent and was active in that profession until his retirement.

He was past president of the Struthers Rotary Club, past president of the Struthers Businessmen's Association, and past president of the Ohio Ready-Mixed Concrete Association. He was past Commodore of the Gravel Bar Yacht Club in Lakeside, OH, and an instructor in the United States Power Squadron. Joe was a member of the Youngstown Club, a 32nd Degree Mason of the Poland Masonic Lodge, The Sahib Shrine Temple in Sarasota, FL, a member of the Sarasota Bay Rotary Club and the Sarasota Board of Realtors.

Joe is survived by three daughters, Martha E. Hoag of Columbiana, OH, Kathryn H. (James) Scheip of Springfield, VA, and Susan K. Mosier of Orrville, OH; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Mary Catharine Horne who died on March 21, 2015; and sister, Mary W. Cooper.
