Dr. Joseph E. Burns, Jr., 82, of Howland, died at home at 2:08 PM Thursday, January 15, 2004.
He was born Tuesday, March 15, 1921, in Akron, the son of the late Joseph E., Sr. and Hazel Cole Burns.
Dr. Burns was a graduate of Akron St. Vincent - St. Mary High School, Western Reserve University, and Western Reserve School of Medicine. He served in the Army Medical Corps in the occupation of Japan, attaining the rank of Captain. After his military service, he served at Crile Hospital in Cleveland and Akron Children's Hospital before moving to Warren and into practice with Dr. Edward Bauman. In 1954, he began his 42-year private practice in Warren.
Dr. Burns was a member of the Buckeye Club and of Christ Episcopal Church, where he had served on the Vestry. He had been Chief of Staff and Chief of Orthopaedics at Trumbull Memorial Hospital. He had been on staff at Trumbull Memorial Hospital, St. Joseph Riverside Hospital, and Hillside Hospital. He had done work for Children's Rehabilitation Center. He was a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Surviving Dr. Burns are his wife, Marilyn F. Burns of Howland; three children: Peter E. Burns of Philadelphia, Pa., David H. Burns of Reading, Pa., and Sara E. Burns-Pardee of Carmel, Calif.; four grandchildren: Anne Katharine Burns, Megan Kennedy Burns, Aaron Hamilton Burns, and Evan Montgomery Burns; four step-children: Lynne Vellente of Howland, Julie Gross of Champion, David Karenke of Champion, and Michael Karenke of Champion; and a sister, Susanna Johnson of Littleton, Colorado.
Preceding Dr. Burns in death are his parents; his wife, Frances K. Smith Burns, whom he married in 1945 and who died in 1998; and two sons: Joseph William Burns and Phillip Chamberlain Burns.
A memorial service for Dr. Burns will be held at 12:00 Noon Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at Christ Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic St. N.E., Warren, Ohio 44483, with Rev. Robert M. Lindberg officiating. There are no calling hours. Inurnment will follow at the church's columbarium.
