John Crosby Sutliff, 28, Cortland, OH. died Sunday, January 1, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family after a two year battle with cancer. John was born February 28, 1983 in Chardon, OH. the son of Paul C. and Margaret M. (Kawalec) Sutliff.
He attended West Farmington Elementary and completed his graduation certificate at home. During his school years, he participated in the Young Marines Program and along with his brothers. He was on the team that received accommodations for breaking the record for most laps run at the Relay for Life.
John worked with his father and brothers in the family-owned business, Sutliff Construction. John also opened his own company, Sutliff Siding and Door. He was of the Roman Catholic faith and attended Our Lady of Sorrows, Girard, OH.
John's hobbies included researching family genealogy and war history. He was an avid Civil War re-enactor, holding the rank of Captain for the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. His family never knew what they would find on his feet - boots, roller skates, or dancing shoes. His love of ballroom dancing led to the eventual meeting of his bride, Trisha (Vanek) Sutliff. They were married on May 20, 2006.
He is survived by his wife, Trisha, a son; Stephen; his parents; Paul and Margaret, and his grandmother, Nelda Kawalec. He also leaves his siblings, Jeri (Keith) Workman, Reed (Julie), Paul W. "Buck" (Jacinta), Luke (Gretchen); his 8 nieces; and 5 nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Doreen and Victor Sutliff, and grandfather, John Kawalec.
Friends and family may call at the McFarland & Son Funeral Home, Warren, Wednesday, January 4,2012 6-8 PM. A Catholic burial mass will be held on Thursday at noon at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon, 2759 North Lipkey Road, North Jackson, OH, 44451, followed by burial at Crosby Cemetery in Rome, OH.
