John J. Manofsky II, 87, of Warren, died 9:08 PM Thursday, February 3, 2005 at Autumn Hills Care Center in Niles. He was born in Sharon, Pa., on November 13, 1917, the son of John J. Sr. and Anna U. Manofsky.
In 1920, the family moved to Warren, where John was educated in the city schools, graduating from Warren G. Harding in 1936, and from John Carroll University in Cleveland in 1940, with a major in chemistry.
As a youngster, he caddied at Trumbull Country Club, was employed briefly at Youngstown Pressed Steel, then as a tool and die maker at National Gypsum in Niles, but primarily at Hynes Industries, Inc. of Youngstown in the Roll Formed Division as a mechanical engineer. Later, he was in charge of the machine shop, retiring in 1984 after 35 years of service.
He had belonged to various quality control and metal societies in the Valley and was a life member of Mahoning Valley Management Assn., Inc.
He had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Always a sports enthusiast, he played organized ice hockey and was a welterweight boxer in college. He belonged to various bowling leagues and to Warren City Golf Leagues for many years, was a member of Youngstown District Amateur Golf Assn., and played in Ohio Public Links tournaments.
He was a longtime member of St. Mary's Church, where he was an usher. In 1959, he became a charter member of Blessed Sacrament Parish, where he continued to usher. He was an honorary life member of Knights of Columbus.
During his retirement years, he enjoyed travel, doing yard work, feeding and watching birds, watching football and golf on television, and being a constant companion to his wife.
John is survived by his wife, the former Gloria Ann Wherley, whom he married November 27, 1965, and by a niece and a nephew.
Preceding John in death are his parents; a sister, Pauline Tvarock; and two brothers: Edward T. and Albert Manofsky.
Services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at Blessed Sacrament Church, 3020 Reeves Rd. N.E., Warren, Ohio 44483, with Fr. Donald E. King officiating. Interment will follow at All Souls Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 AM Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, material contributions may be made to Blessed Sacrament Church.
