October 4, 1923 — May 11, 2011

John G. Durica, 87, of Bristolville, passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Windsor House of Champion following a brief illness. He was born October 4, 1923 in Youngtown, Ohio, the son of John and Paulina (Buchello) Durica.

Growing up in Gustavus, where he graduated from high school, he joined the Merchant Marines and served five years during World War II. On May 5, 1947, he married Helen Vilhosky, and they shared 64 years together. He received a civil engineering degree from the University of Kentucky, and spent most of his life working in various hospitals and an automotive plant.

John enjoyed gardening, collecting special pieces of wood, taking Helen on Sunday drives through Gustavus, and especially working for his daily wage. He encouraged his children with a sense of adventure and challenged them to fulfill their dreams. He was a devoted member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Warren, where he would be seen each Sunday for early Mass.

He and Helen had five children: John (Marge) of Garrettsville, Edward (Dawn) of Bristolville; Suzie Koltak (Alex McDowell) of Warren; Timothy of Burghill, and Tina Bolyard of Phoenix, Ariz.; ten grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. His brothers George and Joseph precede him in death.

Cremation is taking place. John's life will be celebrated June 18, 2011 at the home of John and Marge Durica in Garrettsville. Material contributions may be made to the Animal Welfare League, 545 Brunstetter Rd. S.W., Warren, Ohio 44481.
