John L. Chiarella Sr., 85, of Warren, died at Trumbull Memorial Hospital Friday, February 15, 2008. He was born November 5, 1922 in Warren, the son of Louie and Celia (Gentile) Chiarella, and had lived in the Warren area his entire life.
He graduated from Warren G. Harding High School before becoming a graduate of Youngstown College. Mr. Chiarella served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant in the 559th Bomb Squadron before being honorably discharged on June 29, 1945. He worked as an inspector at Copperweld before his retirement. John enjoyed music, playing the accordion, as well as gardening and painting houses part time. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia (Moore) Chiarella whom he married on April 17, 1948; his children, Kathleen (Richard) Layton of Dover, Ohio, Louis (Peggy) Chiarella of Warren, Cheryl (Joseph) Carby of Warren, James Chiarella of Fort Myers Florida, Anthony (Karen) Chiarella of Morristown, Arizona, Lynette (Robert) Cheatwood of Doyline, Louisiana and Tina (Steven) Owsley of Warren. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his son, John Chiarella Jr.; a brother, Dominic Chiarella; and a sister, Antoinette Kovarik.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 232 Seneca N.E., Warren, Ohio 44481, with Fr. Bernard Schmalzried officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery at a later date. Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday evening at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, 271 North Park Ave., Warren, Ohio 44481.
