James A. Roemer

James A. Roemer, 100, of Warren, died 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at Shepherd of the Valley in Howland. He was born December 5, 1905 in Youngstown, the son of Henry A. and May Sahli Roemer, and had lived in the Warren area since 1933.

Mr. Roemer graduated in 1923 from Canton McKinley High School and in 1927 from Oberlin College, where he majored in economics and lettered in baseball. He was well known in the steel industry, beginning his career with Youngstown Pressed Steel, then moving to Niles Rolling Mill and Mallory Sharon Titanium. He became president then chairman of Sharon Steel, president of Shenango Metalcraft Corp., and president of Roemer Industries, Inc.

He held many directorships, including Niles Rolling Mill, Sharon Steel, Mallory Sharon Titanium, Reactive Metals, Inc, the Industrial Information Institute, Inc., the Trumbull County Manufacturing Association, the Chambers of Commerce in Niles, Sharon, and Warren, Union Savings and Trust, Dollar Savings Bank, St. Joseph Riverside Hospital, Sharon General Hospital, Shenango Metalcraft, Roemer Industries, and the Western Reserve Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

He was a former trustee for the Blue Cross of Eastern Ohio and the Butler Institute of American Art, a 32nd degree Mason, a Shriner, Jesters Cleveland Court No. 14, a former vestry member, junior warden and member of the foundation of Christ Episcopal Church, a 70-year honorary member of the Trumbull Country Club, a 50-year honorary member of the Buckeye Club, and a member of the Youngstown Country Club and the Congress Lake Country Club in Hartville.

He enjoyed art, golfing, and hunting. He and his wife, Helen, traveled extensively around the world. At age 95, he stepped onto the continent of Antarctica.

In 1953, he was featured in a Time magazine article after being awarded a patent on a method of rolling titanium sheet metal.

He will be sadly missed by his two sons, William F. (Linda) Roemer of Sewickley, Pa. and James Quentin (Pat) Roemer of Findlay; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Gretchen (Bruce) Birrell. Preceding him in death are his parents and his wife, Helen James Roemer, whom he married June 1, 1929 and who died November 28, 1995.

A memorial service will be held 12:00 Noon Saturday, March 18, 2006 at Christ Episcopal Church, with Rev. Donna L. Maree and Fr. Robert Lindberg officiating. Inurnment in the Christ Episcopal columbarium will follow. Friends may call 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon on March 18 at the church.
