James Oliver Herman

Girard, Ohio - James O. Herman, 79, died Sunday, January 17, 2016 at Vista Center at the Ridge. He was born on November 1, 1936 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of the late Christian and Mary Bills Herman.

Jim retired from Packard Electric Div. of GM after 32 years in Labor Relations, Safety Director, Plant Superintendent/Manager, and Head of Quality Control. Jim Graduated from The University of Cincinnati with a bachelor's Degree in Political Science.

Through the years, Jim was active in many community, volunteer and professional organizations:
Blessed Sacrament Parish Council, National Safety Council Executive Committee, Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild, Chairman of Howland Twp. Zoning Commission, Upton Association, American Lung Association,among others and was an Honorary Tennessee Squire. Jim's quick wit and personality made him a highly sought after "King of Roasts."

He served his country in the Navy during the Korean War as a battleship radar man aboard the USS North Hampton.

Jim was an accomplished golfer who played many fabled courses around the world on the Navy Golf Team. He organized countless golf outings and tournaments around town. He boasted having played every public course within a day's drive from Warren and registered three holes- in- one and a double eagle.

Memories of Jim will be carried on by his wife, Susan Herman of Girard, OH, daughter, Jane (Hugh) Pool of Brooklyn, NY, son, Pete (Dr. Stephanie Smith) Herman of Liberty and son Andy (Amelina) Herman of Warren, OH, 8 grandchildren, Beau & Lilly Pool, Lulu, Teddy, Alicia, Luc, Naomi and Benjamin Herman, 2 sisters, Patricia Subbayya, and Nancy Parks, 2 brothers, The Honorable Judge Thomas Herman, and Donald ("Fish")Herman, brother-in-law, Bill Sontag, and sister-in-law, Dr. Lyn Sontag

Family will receive friends Thursday, January 21, 2016 from 4:00 pm till 6:00 pm at the McFarland & Son Funeral Home, Warren. Services will be held at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, Friday, January 22, 2016 at 4:00 pm with visitation prior to the service from 3:00pm till 4.00pm Military Honors will be presented immediately following the service.
