Herbert H. Harrington, Sr., 88, of Warren and formerly of Niles, died Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at Trumbull Memorial Hospital. He was born January 29, 1923 in Gardner, Mass., and had lived in Trumbull County since 1962.
A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, from which he was awarded three Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and a Silver Star, he also served in the battle of Saint-Lo, France. Mr. Harrington retired from Conrail after 33 years of employment. He later worked for the Tribune Chronicle in typesetting. A lifetime member of the police and fire departments in Meadville, Pa., he was an avid stamp collector who specialized in first day cover stamps, was the first President of the PMCC, and belonged to NOPC. He also collected coins, lighthouses, and trains.
Surviving are two sons: Herbert H. Harrington, Jr. of Whiteville, Tenn. and David (Karen) Harrington of Niles; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death are two wives, Sarah Frances (Rodgers) Harrington and Marcia (Britton) Harrington; a daughter, Kathleen A. Harrington; two sisters: Doris and Charlotte; and a brother, Robert.
Services are 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 12, 2011 at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, with Rev. Gary McCartney officiating. Entombment with full military honors will follow at Crown Hill Burial Park. Friends may call 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday and 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
