Harry J. Webb, 83, of Cortland and formerly of Champion, died at home March 2, 2010 after an extended illness. He was born May 18, 1926 in Reynoldsville, W. Va., the son of Alfred Henry and Agnes Winnie (Starkey) Webb, and had lived in Trumbull County most of his life.
A graduate of Warren G. Harding High School, Mr. Webb served as an electric mechanic in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He had owned Carlo's Restaurant in Newton Falls and the Newton Falls Beverage Center, worked for 30 years as superintendent at Van Huffel Tube, and retired from General Motors as a carpenter in 1988, after 15 years of employment.
He had played baseball in the minor leagues and had a tryout with the Boston Red Sox. He was a big fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears, and enjoyed golf and yard work.
Surviving are his wife, Helen (Swiatkwich) Webb, whom he married May 3, 1952; three children: Theodore J. (Denise) Webb of Cortland, Sandra K. Veri and fiance Pat Hite of Cuyahoga Falls, and Nancy K. (Craig) Boley of Warren; five grandchildren: Michelle Zetterquist, Brian T. (Jessica) Webb, Nicola (Charles) Mildren, Michael (Andrea) Veri, and Alex Boley; four great-grandchildren: Jacob and Megan Zetterquist, and Annette and Margaret Mildren; a sister, Joan (Bob) Kozak of North Carolina; and a brother, Alfred "Bruce" Webb of Warren. Preceding him in death are his parents; a son, Thomas B. Webb; a granddaughter, Samantha Boley; a sister, Constance Church; and three brothers: Frederick, David "Jack", and Samuel "Red" Webb.
Services are private. Interment with full military honors will take place at All Souls Cemetery. Material contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 525 N. Broad St., Canfield, Ohio 44406, in memory of Thomas B. Webb, Harry's son.
