Grace O. Brandes

Grace O. Brandes, 93 of Howland, died Monday, February 9, 2009 at Forum Health - Trumbull Memorial Hospital. She was born January 26, 1916 in Cleveland, the daughter of Fred and Emily (Neumann) Ohm.

Mrs. Brandes was a graduate of John Adams High School in Cleveland and an accomplished artist and calligrapher. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Warren and its Epworth Sunday School class, Joy Circle, and Keenagers. She also belonged to Morning Light Chapter #80, Order of the Easter Star, and its 80-plus group; the Warren Women's Club; and the Western Reserve Calligraphy Society in Cleveland. She was past president of the Howland Garden Club, past president of the Art Alliance of Youngstown, and former secretary-treasurer of Welcome Wagon. She taught ceramics for twelve years at the Dunkirk Conference Grounds as well as with other organizations.

Surviving are her children, Lynne B. (Jack) Jordan of Amherst and Thomas A. (Patty) Brandes of Chardon; five grandchildren: Julie (Patrick) Samsel, Jeffrey (Donnelle) Jordan, Jennifer (Jon) George, Carrie (Mike) Shuster, and Dr. Thomas (Nikki) Brandes; twelve great-grandchildren; and a brother, Richard Ohm of Columbia Station. Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband, Frank A. Brandes, whom she married November 18, 1939 and who died June 13, 2001; a sister, Mildred Tropf; and a brother, Henry Ohm.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 14, 2009 at First United Methodist Church in Warren, with Rev. Rick Oaks officiating. Interment will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg. Friends may call 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Friday at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, and 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Van Wye room of the church. Eastern Star services will be conducted at 3:45 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Material contributions may be made either to First United Methodist Church, 309 N. Park Ave., Warren, Ohio 44481, or the donor's favorite charity.
