Gertrude I. King, 97, of Warren, died Thursday, April 3, 2008 at Community Skilled Nursing Centre. She was born June 3, 1910 in Farmington, Ohio, the daughter of George H. and Mabel (Matteson) King.

The family came to Warren in 1921 where she attended Elm Road School and East Junior, graduating from Harding High School in 1928.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Harry L. King; a nephew, Gordon Harwood King; and a sister-in-law, Edna Mae King. She is survived by numerous cousins and a special friend, Mary Margaret Baker of Southington.

In preparation for teaching, she attended Denison University, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. She taught at Roosevelt, Tod Ave., and Alden Schools in Warren a total of 40 years.

She held memberships in national, state, and local teachers' organizations, and belonged to the Business Women's Club of the YWCA.

She was a member of First Assembly of God in Warren and participated in the Ladies Prayer & Share group. For five seasons, she attended the youth camp at Bakers Mills, N.Y. in the Adirondacks. Later, she worked during the summers in Holiness camp meetings in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Miss King was affiliated with Wycliffe Bible Translators and the American Tract Society. She sponsored a prayer band in her home for many years and World Gospel Mission. She went on a wilderness trail ride given by The Wilderness Society for ten days, using horses and teepees in the wilderness area of Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. She spent a month in Scandinavia as part of a study of the Lapp people.

Her life was dedicated to the distribution of the Word of God via gospel tracts - in person, on the street, and by mail.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, with Rev. Richard Ballinger of First Assembly of God officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery in West Farmington. Friends may call 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
