George E. Lawrence of Niles passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, March 29, 2024, in Mercy Health St. Joseph Warren Hospital. He was 91 years old.
He was born in Niles on July 6, 1932, the son of the late Clyde and Faye Roush Lawrence.
George was a 1951 graduate of Niles McKinley High School. Following high school, George proudly served our country in the United States Air Force.
Mr. Lawrence retired after 35 years from the City of Niles Water Department where he was a foreman. Following his retirement, George went on to work as a surveyor for Thomas Fok & Associates, Inc.
Mr. Lawrence was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. George had a passion for craftsmanship, he constructed his own home from the ground up with meticulous attention to detail. Though he always left it up to the professionals when it came to electrical work, he left his mark on all other aspects of the construction project. He found solace in the simple pleasures of life such as mowing and tending to his yard. His fondness for leisurely trips to Florida with his beloved wife brought them countless cherished memories. Yet, his greatest joy came from being present for all the grandchildren and great grandchildren’s milestones and events.
He is survived by his wife, Mabel Underwood Lawrence, whom he married October 24, 1953. They recently celebrated 70 years of marriage; 2 children, Bruce (Jackie) Lawrence of Cortland and Georgia Schneider of Niles; 3 grandchildren Jennifer (Adam) Heckman, Nicholas (Jacci) Lawrence, and Joshua Lawrence; 8 great grandchildren, Bella & Clayton, Sam & Leo, Zoey & Ben, Jason & Jade.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Chuck, Toby, and Robert Lawrence; a sister, June Hart; a son-in-law, Henry Schneider.
