EDWIN B. BAKER, age 88, died Friday, February 10, 2012, after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born April 7, 1923 to Edwin J. and Nellie (Pearce) Baker.
Mr. Baker spent his youth in Mineral Ridge, OH and graduated from Mineral Ridge High School in 1941. He worked tirelessly from an early age to help support his family during difficult times. He enlisted in the United States Navy and earned the rank of Gunner's Mate First Class, heading up the operations on a Liberty ship during World War II. After working for Can Do Company and others and learning all he could from his jobs, even becoming a journeyman carpenter in less than a year, he launched E.B. Baker and Sons General Contractors. He became known for excellent workmanship, service, kindness and humor, ethical practices, and value to his customersa"qualities passed down to the next generations.
Ed loved times spent with family and friends, especially when combined with travel aboard cruise ships; he and Ann enjoyed 22 cruises over the years. Ed belonged to the Howland United Methodist Church and to the Buckeye Club of Warren.
Edwin was preceded in death by his devoted wife just nine months ago, on April 19, 2011, and his parents, sisters Lois Turner (Mrs. George) and Nellie Belle Mrofchak (Mrs. Joseph).
Those remaining to cherish his memory include: sons Roger E. Baker, M.D. (Jan) of Canton, OH, Randall P. Baker (Suzanne) of Lake Milton, OH, and Charles D. Baker (Sue) of Howland, OH; grandchildren Molly Meister (Frank) of North Canton, OH, Brad Baker of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Alexander Baker (April), of Florham, NJ, Matthew Baker (Tina) of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Libbey Baumgarten (Adam) of New York, NY, Kristen Gebhardt (Douglas) of Howland, OH, Deanna Andamasaris (William) of Howland, OH, and Julie Lintz (Wade) of Austin, TX; great grandchildren Samuel and Caroline Meister, Keira Baker, Brady, Blake and Beau Baker, Hayley Magrell, Isabella, Lauren and John Baker, Elliot and Avery Gebhardt, Sydney and Ryley Andamasaris, and Wyatt Lintz; sisters Jane Lindsey (Mrs. Robert), Jean Baker, and brother Ronald Baker (Kitty); many cousins, nieces, nephews, dear friends and business associates.
The family will be present to receive friends at the McFarland & Son Funeral Home, Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 5-7 P.M. Services will be held Wednesday at 1:00 PM at the Howland United Methodist Church where friends may call one hour prior to the services. The Rev. Matthew Darrin will officiate.
