Edward R. Cleckner, 93, of Cortland, died 12:40 PM Sunday, April 23, 2006 at Forum Health - Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren. He was born May 7, 1912 in Ellwood, Indiana, the son of David and Maude Mae Smith Cleckner. Ed lived in Trumbull County most of his life.
Ed retired from Packard Electric in 1977, after 28 years of service. He was well-known for his many activities in the community and with Packard Electric. He was the 1975 recipient of the George Meany award from the AFL-CIO, the Packard Electric Division award for excellence in Community service, the Jim Taylor Voluntary Service medal, the City of Hope award, the Silver Beaver award, and the Distinguished Eagle Scout award for the oldest living and longest serving Boy Scout. He had served with the U.S. Recruiting Service, the 4-H youth of Trumbull County, the Trumbull County Planning Commission, and spent 15 years on the board of the American Red Cross. He had been vice-president of both the Trumbull County Fair board and Local 717-IUE. He had been a judge in the Parade of Colors and a Democratic precinct committeeman.
He will be sadly missed by seven children: Retired Army Major John (Doris) Cleckner of Redding, Calif., Sharon (Frank) Gargasz of Greenville, Pa., Nancy (Jon) Dawson of Haines, Alaska, Col. William (Michele) Cleckner of the Air Force in Rio Rancho, N.M., Robyn (Jack) Hineman of Cortland, Melinda (Rich) Dunlap of Poquoson, Va., and Melody Santos and fiance Phil Robas of Navarre, Fla; eighteen grandchildren: John II, Kelly Sue, Shawn, Tamara, Jennifer, Vanessa, Lucas, Jason, Jeremy, Cali, Adam, Jesse, Sarah, Lance, Alexander, Brendon, Dylan, and Philip; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a niece, Pat Thompson of Largo, Fla.; and special friends Maggie, Carol, Dan, Frank and Sherry, and Margaret. Preceding him in death are his parents; his wife, Mary Lou Painter Cleckner, whom he married May 7, 1949 and who died January 11, 1969; his step-father, Wilfred Pete Moore; a son, Marine Corporal Raymond Lewis Cleckner; a grandson, Troy; a brother, Bill Moore; and a sister, Virginia Shorts.
A celebration of life will be held 1:00 PM Friday, April 28, 2006 at McFarland & Son Funeral Home. Friends may call 4:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
