Cortland, Ohio - Edward F. Better III, 86, died Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 5:55pm at his residence. He was born on September 18, 1927 in Watertown, Massachusetts, son of the late Edward F. and Elizabeth (Glancy) Better, Jr.
Mr. Better was retired as the President and CEO of Ohio Corrugating Co. and a former Executive Vice President of Reese Tool and Supply Co both of Warren. He was currently an associate with Aufman Associates of Sewickley, PA.
Edward served on the boards of the following organizations: Trumbull Memorial Hospital, including Trustee Emeritus of the Trumbull Memorial Hospital Foundation, Trumbull County United Way, Trumbull County Red Cross and Niles Bank.
He was past President of the Trumbull Country Club and the Buckeye Club. His other memberships included Laurel Oak Country Club in Sarasota FL and Warren's First United Methodist Church. He was also a Senior Emeritus member of the Rockwell Springs Trout Club.
Edward served his country in the US Air Force as Captain, pilot and instructor during World War II and later served in the Massachusetts Air National Guard. He was an engineering graduate of American International College of Springfield MA.
His hobbies included restoring his Ford Model A which he named "Miss Daisy" and was a member of the Penn-Ohio A Ford Club, 5 Points Chapter. He also was an avid collector of pre-World War II, Standard Gauge Model Trains and loved sharing them with friends and family.
Fond memories of Ed will be carried on by his daughter, Susan E. Better of Niles, OH, son, William E. (Elane) Better of Shaker Heights, OH, grandchildren, Michael and Natalie Better, companion Marilyn Burns of Cortland, OH, and several nieces and nephews. He will be remembered as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend.
He was preceded in death by his wife Julia Kerr Better who he married December 6, 1958 and who died November 14, 2004, and two sisters, Betty O'Malley, and Ruth Van Kleek of MA.
Family will receive friends Sunday, June 8, 2014 from 4:00 to 6:00PM at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, Warren and also one hour prior to the services at the church. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church, Warren. Monday June 9, 2014 at 11:00AM with Pastor Rick Oaks officiating. Services of final committal will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Warren, Ohio.
