Dr. Edward Eugene Bauman died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at Four Winds Manor, Verona, Wis. Ed was born to George Isaac Bauman and Elsie Carrel Bauman on Feb. 17, 1919 in Cleveland, Ohio.
He graduated from South Euclid High in 1935, entered Western Reserve University that fall and graduated at the top of his class in 1939. He entered Western Reserve Medical School and graduated in 1943. He was married to Margaret Virginia Kreuzwieser on Jan. 17, 1942 in Cleveland by the Rev. Paul G. Adams.
After graduating from Medical School, Ed and Margaret moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where Ed began an orthopedic internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He also had a three-month residency at Children's Hospital School in Baltimore. On Oct. 7, 1944, Ed was drafted into the US Army 374th Medical Detachment stationed in Guam. During his three years in Guam, he earned the rank of Major, chief of orthopedic surgery, chief of all surgical operations and laboratory services as well as working as a cardio-vascular surgeon. Upon returning to the U.S., he and Margaret settled in Warren, Ohio, where he became chief of orthopedic surgery at Trumbull Memorial Hospital. He was also active at St. Joseph's Riverside Hospital of Warren.
Ed and Margaret had five children: Susan (Robert) Krisher, George (Becky) Bauman, Marjorie Bauman, Allen (Lois) Bauman, and Carole (David) Cook. They also nurtured many other foster and foreign young adults, most notably Flemming Jensen of Aarus, Denmark, and an AFS Student, Peter Kehrer, now of Hanover, Germany.
The Bauman household was a crossroads for many venues in church and society. Ed was honored for his work with the crippled children of Trumbull County, as well as his many cutting-edge orthopedic surgical procedures. He was also Medical Adviser for Indian Missions of the American Lutheran Church.
Ed was devoted to his family, his profession, his church, and to the greater global community. He loved hosting family, church, and community events at 3101 East Market Street in Warren, and he was the life of the party. Ed enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, and traveling the world until he went blind in 1980.
Ed retired from his orthopedic practice in mid-November 1980, because of a ruptured disc, blindness, and hearing loss. Ed and Margaret gave generous financial gifts to their church, Trumbull County Medical Society, Crippled Children Association, Case Western Reserve University, and St. Olaf College, from where two of their children graduated. They also supported research for Retinitis Pigmentosa Ushers, the affliction which limited his professional career, through the Burson Mass Eye & Ear Clinic of Boston, Mass.
