Earl M. Hummell

December 26, 1921 — March 18, 2007

Earl Melvyn Hummell, a resident of Warren, Ohio, died on March 18 at age 85, of esophageal cancer in Tucson, Arizona.

He was born December 26, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio to George Chester Hummell and Goldie Marie McManaway. Earl attended Guernsey Mines School, Brown High School, and Ohio State University. In 1942, his college was interrupted when he entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. He served on the USS Ellison and the destroyer The Fred T. Berry, receiving an honorable discharge in 1945.

In March 10, 1946, Earl married Mary Frances Piper in Saybrook, Ohio. They started married life in Columbus, Ohio, where he resumed studies at OSU. They then moved to Warren where they settled down to raise their family.

They owned an ice cream shop, then a heating and cooling business. Earl later took employment at Republic Steel as a pipefitter, with a period of employment at Ravenna Arsenal. He was active in Boy Scouts and served in various capacities as Webelos and scout leader, as were his sons and grandsons. He attended summer camps and the national scout camp in Philmont, New Mexico.

He loved the Southwest, and Western movies and TV shows. In addition, Earl was a newspaper columnist, author of "Youth on the Move" and instructed gun safety and safe driving courses for youth.

Earl was involved in various fraternal and veterans organizations including the Odd Fellows, VFW (Cooties), the American Legion, and AmVets. Upon retirement, he volunteered at the Brecksville Center, a part of the Veteran's Administration Hospital network.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Frances; his daughter, Kathleen Piper Hummell Ryder; his parents; and his sister, Carolyn Boyer. He is survived by his sister, Norma Meighen of Carmel, Indiana; his sons, Michael (Brigitt) of Warren, Ohio, Mark (Elizabeth) of Marietta, Georgia, and Karl (Jenny) of Warren, Ohio; daughters Karin (Roger) Yohem of Tucson, Arizona, and Barbara (John) Atkins of Indianapolis, Indiana.

He is also survived by grandchildren Benjamin and Lillie Ratell, Christopher Hummell, Mark, Sara, and Kaitlynne Hummell, and Mary Yohem; his brothers-in-law Frank Piper of Saybrook, Ohio, and James (Lois) Piper of Oxnard, California; and his nephews and nieces Debbie (Gary) Jones, John (Irma) Boyer, Linda (William) Murray, Bea Ann Piper, Kenneth (Kathy) Piper, David (Martha) Piper, Richard (Marcella) Piper, Patricia (Dean) Moore, and Marilyn Meighen.

Services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, March 24, 2007 at McFarland & Son Funeral Home. Friends may call 5:00-7:00 PM Friday and 10:00-11:00 AM Saturday at the funeral home. Private interment will take place at Crown Hill Burial Park.
