CORTLAND - Dorothy S. Klein, 81, co-founder of SCOPE, Inc., died Tuesday, May 15, 2007 of heart disease at Forum Health Northside Medical Center in Youngstown.
She was born in Bedford, Ohio on December 28, 1925, the daughter of Edwin K. and Mary A. Shay. She was graduated from Maple Heights High School, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kent State University in 1948.
In 1962, Dorothy, with Roberta Graham, co-founded SCOPE, Inc., the premier provider of vital services to senior citizens in Trumbull County, and she served on the SCOPE board of directors for much of its history. SCOPE's annual Dorothy S. Klein Award is named in her honor.
Dorothy was a member of the Trumbull County and Bazetta-Cortland Historical Societies. She was instrumental in the renovation of the Cortland Opera House, the founding of the Viets Museum, and the establishment of the Morning at the Museum series, as well as the regular SCOPE programs at Lake Vista, where she resided. She was also a member of the Cortland Literary Club.
For more than 50 years, Dorothy wrote regular columns for various local newspapers, most recently her monthly column in the Senior News section of The Tribune Chronicle.
She was recognized as a Community Star by the Tribune Chronicle in 2003, and was presented the Cortland Area Chamber of Commerce's Outstanding Citizen Award in 1989.
Dorothy is survived by her son Kent (Erin) Klein of Arlington, Va., and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Erwin J. Klein, on December 29, 1993.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 18, 2007 at McFarland & Son Funeral Home. Private burial will take place at a later date at Twinsburg Crown Hill Cemetery. Friends may call 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to SCOPE, Inc., 220 W. Market St., Warren, Ohio 44481, or to the Viets Museum, 224 N. High St., Cortland, Ohio 44410.
