Cortland- Donald L. Knowlton, age 88, retired from this life on earth and ascended into heaven to be with God and his wife on Wednesday, August 30th, 2017 after battling various health complications this year.
He was born the son of the late Edna and Lee Knowlton on February 7, 1929 in Warren and was one of four children.
Don spent his childhood and grade school years in Warren where he attended
Warren G. Harding High School. Prior to his senior year his father was transferred to Pittsburgh, so that Don graduated from Charleroi High School in Pittsburgh in 1947. Don stayed in Pittsburgh and attended University of Pittsburgh, where he obtained his Bachelors degree in business in 1951.
After completing his education, Don moved back to Warren in 1952 and began his career at Republic Steel Corp. He held several positions at Republic and retired in 1985 as the manager of Production Planning. He then spent one year with Sharon Steel and then officially retired in 1986.
Donald married the love of his life "Betty" at Christ Episcopal Church, Warren on June 27, 1959. They were married for 58 wonderful years before she passed last year.
Over the years, Don, Betty and their family spent many happy times traveling with their camper to Panama City, FL, Gatlinburg TN, Disney World and Myrtle Beach. Don also cherished his memories of Lake Milton and the years growing up at the family cottage.
He had many hobbies, especially woodworking, building decks and home remodeling projects. Don had a true passion for picking up his hammer and creating something he designed. He built beautiful decks that will be enjoyed by family and acquaintances for years. He spent many pleasurable times, on a Sunny Day (with a cold beer), building a project with one of his close friends or relatives. He likewise was a passionate Pittsburgh Steelers fan and occupied many Sundays cheering them on. The "Steelers" were the only team you watched in Don's house.
Don and Betty also enjoyed giving to Christ Episcopal Church. He was a member of various committees and offered his talents to numerous remolding and building projects of the church.
As the very loving, kind and generous man, he will be missed by all who knew him. Don is survived by his two sons, Kevin of Howland and Greg (Jim) of Parma, along with a niece, Janet of Howland,
He was preceded in death by brothers, Kenneth and Howard and sister, Nina.
The family will receive friends Sunday, September 24th, 2017 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm. at Christ Episcopal Church, Warren. Services will be held immediately following the visitation at the church with Rev. Fr. Jeffrey Baker officiating. Final committal will follow in the church columbarium.
