Deryl Porter

Champion, Ohio - Deryl Porter, 83, died Friday, August 4, 2017 at his residence following a battle with cancer. He was born on December 12, 1933 in Ravenna, Ohio, the son of the late Opal Porter.

He graduated from Ravenna High School in 1951 and then served his country in the US Army from 1952-1954. He received an honorable discharge with rank of Sergeant. He then attended Kent State University and graduated with a business degree.

Deryl was employed by Packard Electric Div of GM as Divisional Traffic Manager. He was an active member of Tod Ave United Methodist Church. After he retired, Deryl volunteered 25 years for AARP as a tax consultant for the VICA program in Ohio and Florida. He also volunteered to read stories to children through the Ohio Reads program and read to children at Secrest and Dickey Ave Schools. He golfed on the Warren Church and Trumbull Traffic Golf Leagues.


Memories of Deryl will be carried on by wife, Carol Bassett Porter of Champion whom he married July 11, 1953, daughter, Anita Shaw of Cortland, sons, Steven (Kathy) Porter, and Russell (Phyllis) Porter, both of Atlanta, GA, daughter, Amy (Ray) Rabovsky of Overland Park, KS, and family friend, Tony Padgett. Grandchildren, Matthew (Noel), Rebecca, and Jeremy Shaw, Daniel (Lindsey) Porter, Jennifer (Patrick) Arnett, Lauren and Lyndsey Porter, Katie (Eric) Willis, Patrick and Frank Rabovsky, and eight great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Porter, sister, Marilyn Lawson.

The family will receive friends Saturday, August 12, 2017 from 10:00 am till time of service at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, Warren. Services will be held at Noon with Pastor Rick France officiating.
