Warren, Ohio - Attorney David R. Chenoweth, 94, died Saturday, November 5, 2016 at his residence. He was born on November 9, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of the late Harley and Pearl Moore Chenoweth.
David was an attorney and Trust Officer of the Union Savings and Trust Co. Long time member of the 1st Presbyterian Church and board member of the Warren Salvation Army and Oakwood Cemetery Association. He taught real estate law at Kent State University, Trumbull Campus. His wife Olwen "Babs Chenoweth, taught many in the community to swim as a swimming instructor for the YWCA and the Trumbull Co. Chapter of the American Red Cross. They were married May 12, 1945 and she proceeded in death on August 21 1989.
David attended Cleveland Schools and graduated from Ohio Wesleyan with his bachelors' and then the University of Michigan Law School in 1948. He was admitted to the Ohio Bar and moved to Warren the same year where he and "Babs" raised their 3 children who survive, daughters: Mary (Gene) Ramba of Cocoa, Florida and Constance Davis of Warren, with whom David made his home, and son, Richard (Karen) Chenoweth of Warren He also has fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren of whom he is very proud of. Besides his wife he is preceded in death by his son-in-law Terry Davis.
David Richard Chenoweth served in the US Navy during War II. Lt. Chenoweth was assigned to the Fleet Marine Force of the Pacific. During his enlistment he saw action with Japanese Forces at Kwajalein , Guam, Peleliu, and Iwo Jima.
Lt. Chenoweth was honored by the United States government several times for his military activities. Before his Honorable Discharge to the Navel Reserves on January 20, 1946, he had been awarded The Bronze Star Metal, The Navy Unit Citation, and Asiatic Pacific Metal with four campaign stars.
By 1945, Lt. Chenoweth had been assigned to the newly formed 5th Marine Division. The 5th Division saw its first combat action during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Lt. Chenoweth was wounded after he had landed and secured a dangerous lookout position where he could directed artillery from the navy ships offshore toward enemy locations.
The Department of Defense had overlooked this event but after the matter was brought to their attention he was awarded The Military Order of the Purple Heart on his 93th birthday celebration that was attended by his family and state and local officials. He also received proclamations from Senator Brown, Congressman Ryan, Trumbull Co Commissioners and the Mayor Franklin and Warren's City Council.
David's family will receive friends Tuesday November 8, 2016, from 5-7pm and Wednesday from 10-11am at the McFarland & Son Funeral Home, Warren. Services will be held at the Funeral Home, on this birthday, Wednesday at 11:00 am. Services of final committal will follow at Oakwood Cemetery with full military honors.
