David Joseph Bortmas

David Joseph Bortmas, 38, lost his hard-fought battle with addiction Tuesday, October 8, 2019.

David’s disease took his life, but it does not define who he was. He was a complex man with the ability to find humor in most situations and made everything in life entertaining. He was a talented musician, an amazing dancer, and a loyal friend.

David loved music, Cleveland sports, true crime podcasts, watching Marvel movies with his kids, and fried chicken. He had an odd but endearing affection for birds of prey, and he spent his summers dadding-out; cooking on the grill, having bonfires, and taking meticulous care of his lawn.

He also had a deep compassion for the disenfranchised and underdogs, which helps explain his unflinching devotion to the Cleveland Browns. He was a loving son, a caring big brother, and a protective nurturer towards everyone he loved. David was always willing to help a friend in need, and this unselfish devotion to his loved ones carries on in the compassion and generosity he has instilled in his children.

Of all his accomplishments in life, David took the greatest pride in his sons, Samuel (17) and Jackson (10), and his dog Bane. He loved to share endless stories about funny things Jack had said or done, would brag about Sam’s intelligence and impeccable comedic timing, and he’d never hesitate to show pictures of his dog Bane being the big goofball he is. His boys were the light of David’s life, and he was theirs.

David will be eternally missed by his children, Sam and Jack; his wife Jamie; his mother Angela; his father Dave (Denise); his four sisters Kattie (Doug), Joy, Erin, and Hanna; his two brothers Carmen and Steven; his nephew Seth; his niece Nora; and countless aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

Please join us in honoring David’s memory at Wm Nicholas Funeral Home, 614 Warren Ave, Niles OH 44446. Calling hours will be Wednesday, October 16th from 5:00-7:00pm with a memorial service immediately following.
