Charles W. Mathias, M.D. of Sun City Center, Florida and formerly from Niles and Warren, Ohio died November 5, 2008.
Surviving Dr. Mathias is his wife of 62 years, Iona, a niece and a nephew.
He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, October 20, 1915. He attended schools in Niles, Ohio and
graduated from Medical School at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio in 1940.
He served in the military during World War II as a Major, U.S. Army Medical Officer in Anchorage, Alaska from 1944 to 1946. It was there that he met Iona Ketelsen and they married in 1946.
Dr. Mathias practiced medicine in Niles, Howland, and Warren, Ohio areas from 1946 to 1990. Upon retirement, he received an award from Ohio State Medical Association for fifty years of service.
A highlight of his retirement was a historic Globe-Circling Adventure via private chartered Supersonic Concorde with Iona.
Dr. Mathias was a member of the American Medical Association, American Society of Bariatric Physicians, Trumbull County Medical Society and Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
His was affiliated with the American Legion, American Red Cross, Niles Historical Society, Knights of Columbus, Muskoka Ontario, Canada Historical Society, Amateur Radio Relay League, Warren Amateur Radio Association, Lakeland Florida Quarter Century Radio Club and Sun City Center Radio Club. His call letters were W8KGD.
He attended Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Sun City Center.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at Freedom Plaza, Sun City Center.
Internment will be at the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida
Memorials can be made to American Cancer Society, American Red Cross or LifePath Hospice, Sun City Center, in lieu of flowers.
