He was a longtime member of the Cortland United Methodist Church, having served as Chairman of the Finance Committee during construction of the educational wing.

In retirement, he traveled extensively. He also spent a great deal of time building or repairing things for family and friends. He was known for his ability to fix almost anything.

His wife, Olivella Fielder Manning, whom he married November 1, 1936, passed away March 23, 1976.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Martin and Donna Manning of Bazetta Township; a son, Dr. Charles (Gus) Manning of Pleasanton, California; two granddaughters, Mary Anne Manning of Bazetta and Katherine (Kate) Manning of Massachusetts; and a sister, Janet Schroeder of Kansas City, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and two sisters: Virginia (Birdie) Krause and Muriel Youngstrom.
