WARREN - Betty J. Thompson, 86, passed away Monday, August 4, 2014 at Shepherd of the Valley - Niles. She was born on November 16, 1927 in Steubenville, the daughter of the late Chester and Wilhelmina (Brede) Walter.
Betty was a 1945 graduate of Big Red Steubenville High School. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, past president of Emmanuel Lutheran Church Women, Treasurer of Barrier Free Committee and the Christian Fellowship Martha Circle. She volunteered for the Youth Club, was a Girl Scout Leader, delivered Mobile Meals for over 15 years, volunteer at St. Joe's Hospital Chaplains office, and active in the PTO at McGuffy Elementary. She was also a member of Happy Timers at Christ Episcopal. She was current President of Ladies Auxiliary of Military Order of Purple Heart, Life Member of LAMOPH and the DAV Auxiliary. Betty served as an officer on the state level for the Ways & Means Committee of the LAMOPH. She served on the Memorial & Veterans Day committees for over 25 years. She partnered with her husband in chaplain ministry at area nursing homes. Because of her health the last several years, Betty was unable to go out much - yet she wanted to continue to be a blessing to others as she had been during her more active years, so she continued her ministry by sending birthday and anniversary cards to those in her church. Her hobbies were needlepoint, cross-stitch and crocheting and especially reading her kindle.
Betty was a loving homemaker and she felt it was an honor to be a wife, mother and grandmother. She believed her greatest accomplishments were her children and she adored each and every one of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She would end every conversation with "you know I love you very much"!
Memories of Betty will be carried on by son, Richard E. (Bonnie) Thompson, Jr. of Champion; daughter, Janice (Bill) Losey of Warren; daughter, Patricia (Greg) Winchester of Williamsburg, VA; grandchildren, Nicole Schriner, Richard (Ally) Thompson, Lauren (Brian) Patton, William Losey, Jr., Elizabeth (Brian) Zillinger, Jill (Scott) Williams, Sarah Tillotson, Andrew Tillotson, Meghan Winchester, Paul Winchester; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Gracie, Chloe, Camden, Timmy, Jacob, Jarod, Megan and Caden; sister, Mildred Sullivan; and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Thompson.
