Betty Ondo, 84, formerly of Belvedere S.E., Warren, died from complications from Alzheimer's disease 7:30 PM Friday, May 13, 2005 at Community Skilled Nursing Centre in Warren. She was born Wednesday, April 20, 1921 in Warren, the daughter of the late Walter and Almira Swartz Zeigler, and had lived in the area her entire life.
Betty was a June, 1939 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School and worked on the automatic stem machine and as a quality checker for 44 years (1939-1983) at Ohio Lamp Division of General Electric before her retirement. Betty also served as union steward of Shop 1 at Ohio Lamp. She was a member of Second Christian Church in Warren.
Betty was an avid bowler, having travelled across the United States to participate in WIBC bowling tournaments. She belonged to the Lamplighters, the Ohio Lamp Bowling, and the Twilighters Bowling League.
Betty loved to play cards. She belonged to the Canasta Club, and also enjoyed a good game of poker or 500.
Betty was also known for the many retirement parties she helped coodinate for friends and co-workers at Ohio Lamp.
Betty is survived by her cousins Donna Rae Kellogg Hampton of Warren and Jackie Hampton Mills of Howland, and by her sister-in-law, Mary Kay Zeigler of Newcomerstown, Ohio.
Preceding Betty in death are her parents; her husband, William Julius Ondo, whom she married April 25, 1949 in Mercer, Pa., and who died February 22, 1997; a sister, Margaret Mae Zeigler, who died August 2, 2001; and two brothers: Howard John Zeigler, who died November 27, 1972, and Donald Edward Zeigler, who died October 22, 1991.
Services for Betty will be 11:30 AM Monday, May 16, 2005 at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, 271 North Park Avenue, Warren, Ohio 44481, with Rev. Gene Eason of Second Christian Church officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Warren. There will be no calling hours. Material contributions may be made to Second Christian Church, 904 W. Market St., Warren, Ohio 44481.
The family would like to thank the Assisted Living and Alzheimer's Unit at Community Skilled Nursing Centre for their care and compassion for Betty this past year.
