Betty J. Brown Daugherty

Betty Jane Brown Daugherty, 87, formerly of Warren, died 7:35 AM Thursday, January 19, 2006 at Greenfield Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lancaster, N.Y. She was born April 14, 1918 in Warren, the daughter of Oscar Wilmer and Morda Irene Klingensmith Hawk.

Betty was a graduate of Warren G. Harding High School and Wittenberg University, where she majored in dramatics. She was named Miss Wittenberg and Sweetheart of Sigma Chi her senior year. She had a scholarship to the University of Minnesota and was working on her master's when World War II started. Betty volunteered with the Red Cross and was the first woman from Trumbull County to go overseas. She ran the largest servicemen's club the military had in Southeast Asia in Kandy, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) as well as servicemen's clubs in Bombay and Calcutta. A great honor came when she was invited to a birthday party for Lord Mountbatten, Supreme Allied Commander in Southeast Asia, in 1945.

When she returned to Warren, Betty became involved in radio and early TV broadcasts. She was known as "Betty Jane" on WHHH Radio and had three or four programs. She also taught at West Junior High School. Betty served on the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library board for many years, and became known for her book reviews. She was designated "Miss Ohioana" by Gov. Bricker.

Betty will be sadly missed by her brother, G. Wayne (Charline "Bunkie") Hawk of Elma, N.Y.; a stepson, Herbert (Merilee) Daugherty of El Paso, Tex.; a stepdaughter, Shelley Ann (John) Wonders of Warren; three nephews; three great-nieces; a great-nephew; two step-grandsons; and a great-granddaughter. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husbands, Lucian James Brown, who died in 1986, and Herbert H. Daugherty, who died June 24, 2005; and a step-grandson, Garrett P. Wonders.

Services for Betty will be 11:00 AM Monday, January 23, 2006 at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, with Rev. Burt McGlawn of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow at Crown Hill Burial Park. Friends may call 3:00 to 5:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, material contributions may be made to Forum Health at Home - Hospice, 8747 Squires Lane N.E., Warren, Ohio 44484.
