Atty. William R. Hewitt, 80 ,of Fairway Drive N.E., Warren, OH died at his residence on Monday, August 18, 2003.
He was born on Friday, May 18, 1923, in Ashatabula, Ohio, to the late Judge Hugh Hewitt and Grace Kochenderfer Hewitt.
Bill was marred to Marguerite Rohl Hewitt for over 50 years until her death in October, 1997. They had three sons: William (Carmen) of Pottstown, PA, John (Susan) of Warren, and Hugh (Elizabeth) of Irvine, California.
Bill graduated from Ashtabula High School where he was a member of the football team and academically excellent. He started at Oberlin College where his education was interrupted by service in the United States Army.
Upon returning to civilian status, Bill graduated from Oberlin College in 1947 and entered Michigan Law School where he graduated with honors in 1949. He then served as clerk to the Honorable Paul Jones, U.S. District Court Judge.
Bill came to Warren in 1951and entered the practice with Hoppe, Day and Ford, later Hoppe, Frey, Hewitt & Milligan, now Harrington, Hoppe and Mitchell.
His service to the profession was admirable. He served on committees in the local bar, performed pro bono tasks for the Bar at the district and state level, a member of the O.S.B.A. Board of Governors, and was part of the founding of the Ohio State Bar Foundation. He was Chairman of the Board of Directors for St. Joseph Hospital a Humility of Mary Health Care Corp. Trustee, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Warren, serving as an Elder and Usher. a 50+ year member of the American Legion and a strong supporter of John F. Kennedy High School.
He is survived by his sons, his daughters-in-law, seven grandchildren, and his brother Jim Hewitt of Willoughby, Ohio.
He is preceded in death by his wife, his parents and a brother Hugh "Hal" Hewitt.
Friends may call from 7:00 to 9:00 PM on Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at the McFarland and Son Funeral Home, 271 North Park Avenue, Warren, Ohio 44481 and one hour prior to the 11:00 AM service, Thursday, August 21, 2003 at First Presbyterian Church of Warren, the Rev. Donald Ewing will be officiating. Burial will follow at All Souls Cemetery in Cortland.
