Arlo Knepper

December 7, 1929 — September 14, 2015

Arlo Knepper of Niles, passed away at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, September 14, 2015 in Heritage Manor. He was 85.

Arlo was born in East Taylor Twp. PA on December 7, 1929, the son of Frank Russell and Ivella D. Grove Knepper.

He was a graduate of E. Conemaugh High School in Pennsylvania. Following high school, Arlo attended Youngstown College.

Mr. Knepper served his country proudly in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Arlo was stationed on the USS Belle Grove LSD-2, which was involved in the test of 4 atomic bombs and 2 hydrogen bombs over Bikini Atoll Island.

Mr. Knepper retired in 1992 after 34 years as a crane operator for Commercial Sharing, Arlo also was the former President of the United Steel Works Local 2332 in Youngstown.

He enjoyed working in his yard. Most importantly he loved spending time with his family, whether it be camping and spending time in the sun and on his boat, time with family meant the world to him. Arlo also loved to travel, he was able to experience the world while in the military and after, he and his wife took numerous trips to Hawaii and other locations.

Arlo was a long time member of New Hope United Methodist Church. He also was a 50+ year member of the William McKinley 794 F&AM; Valley of Youngstown Scottish Rite, and the Al Koran Shriners A.A.O.N.M.S.

He is survived by his wife Beverly Wilkes Knepper, whom he married October 4, 1953; a daughter, Michele Bishop and her husband Raymond of Niles; a son Mark and his wife Dr. Nancy Knepper of Delaware, OH; 3 sisters, Audrey Matley of Levittown, PA, Cherie Schwartz and her husband Paul of North Granby, CT, and Donna Smith and her husband Harold of Dallas, GA; a sister-in-law, Betty Knepper of Zelienople, PA; 2 grandchildren, Raymond Bishop of Niles and Kristi Bishop Hartman of McDonald; a great granddaughter, Hannah Hartman; In addition, Arlo is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and Special friends and travel companions Lloyd and Sandra Durbin of North Lima.

In addition to his parents, Arlo is preceded in death by a sister, Lola Parshall; a brother Von Knepper; a brother-in-law Ted Matley.

The family would like to thank Gary Weiss and the staff at Heritage Manor for the excellent care Arlo received while there. Also to Heather Kulon for her friendship and care she provided Arlo.

Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2015 in the Wm Nicholas Funeral Home & Cremation Services LLC 614 Warren Ave. Niles, OH 44446. A masonic service will be held at 7:45 p.m. in the funeral home.

A funeral services will be held on Friday, September 18, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Wm Nicholas Funeral Home & Cremation Services LLC 614 Warren Ave. Niles, OH with Rev. Curtis Miller. There will also be calling hours one hour prior to the service.

Internment will take place in Niles City Cemetery where full military honors will be conducted.
