Mentor, Ohio - Arlene B. Hargate, 87, died Thursday, July 27, 2017 at her residence. She was born on May 11, 1930 in Warren, Ohio, the daughter of the late Fred and Ruth Hudson Beardsley.
Arlene graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in 1948 and earned her Bachelors degree at Baldwin-Wallace College in 1952 and St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing, She received her Registered Nursing license in 1953. She then attended Cleveland State University to work on her Masters.
She was active in nursing for 44 years. Her nursing experience included: operating room nurse, St. Luke's Hospital, Visiting Nurse Association of Cleveland as a staff nurse and student instructor, St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing faculty as an instructor where she taught nursing students. She was the school nurse for four intercity schools in Cleveland and served as president of the Cleveland Teachers Union from 1967 till 1971.
She then joined the John Jane Addams School of Practical Nursing and was responsible for the students at Huron Road Hospital School of Nursing 1971-1975 teaching MED-Sur Nursing including Pharmacology. She taught at the Huron Road Hospital School of Nursing 1975-1981 teaching respiratory, neurology, intensive care, coronary by-pass surgery, including heart valve replacement surgery, and senior year Team and Charge Nursing Responsibilities in the clinical area.
In 1981, Mrs. Hargate accepted a position with the Sandusky City Schools as Director of the Sandusky School of Practical Nursing including the student clinical experience at four area hospitals 1981-1991, transferring the school to Erie, Huron, Ottawa Vocation Education, EHOVE Vocational School System in Milan, where she also volunteered for community committees: Board for Alzheimer's, Mental Health Board and many others. After retirement in 1994 she was Health Director of the Health Plan sponsored by Knox Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon, OH until 1997.
Arlene was a member of the Ohio Board of Nursing, the National League of Nursing (New York) and was a Practical Nursing Schools accreditor for Practical Nursing schools within the USA, and was an original member of the Nursing Education Mobility Action Group receiving the MAIN Agency Achievement Award. She is listed in Who's Who in American Nursing from the Society of Nursing Professionals, and the Practical Nursing Association of Ohio, Award of Practical Nursing Education of Ohio in 1994.
Memories of Arlene will be carried on by husband, Edwin V. Hargate, Jr. of Mentor, son, Edwin V. (Kate) Hargate, III of Highland Heights, OH, daughter, Daphne Hargate of Mentor, OH, grandsons, Edwin V. Hargate, IV, William C. Hargate and Timothy B. Hargate.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Earnest C. Beardsley,
The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 1, 2017 from 6:00 pm till 8:00 pm at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, Warren. Services will be held at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at 1:30 pm with services of final committal at Crown Hill Burial Park in Vienna.
