A. MARAE (MARIE) OHL DEAL
December 29, 1914 - July 11, 2006
"I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus" Philippians 3:14 KJV
A. Marae (Marie) Ohl Deal, 91 was called home by her loving Lord in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 11, 2006, after several years of recurring health problems.
She was the sixth child born to Warder W. Ohl and Elizabeth Williams Ohl on December 29, 1914, in Lima, Ohio. She spent her early life in the areas of Hartford, Ohio and Greenville, Pennsylvania.
She has lived in the Warren area for the past 54 years, formerly of Masury, Ohio, Transfer, PA and Sharon, PA in her mature years.
She has been an active member of The Salvation Army since 1932 when she was converted at age 17. She was enrolled as a Senior Soldier (church member) on October 7, 1934 at age 19 in Sharon, PA. She was busy for the Lord from the time she first attended. She sang in the Songster's (choir), played in the Timbrel Brigade, and was commissioned as a Sunday school teacher June 29, 1939, having taught several different age groups through the ensuing years. Her enthusiasm and joy in working with young people led to her becoming Asst. Y.P.S.M., from which she was promoted to full Y.P.S.M. (Young People's Sergeant Major) on November 1, 1947. She was challenged by her Captain (minister) to the privilege and great responsibility in the young people's war that each individual Jr. Soldier be given something to do that will bring about the winning of other souls of young people into the Kingdom of God. A challenge she took seriously to heart. She was "Aunt Marae" to all children who attended the Sharon, PA Corps, of all nationalities.
Marae moved to Warren, OH with her children in 1952. Had her membership enrollment page transferred to the local Corps on May 6, 1953. She had been a part-time worker both in Sharon, PA and Warren, OH in her early years. Always familiar at the Christmas Kettles and walking the weekly route with The War Cry, The Salvation Army Inspirational publication. She was Neighborhood Visitor and went to the hospital with that War Cry also and prayed with many over the weeks of long illnesses with her ready care of any who needed it. She had also volunteered in the Soup Kitchen signing people in with her cheerful smile for several years before her health deterred her from doing so. She was the oldest Sr. Soldier of the Warren Ohio Corps at the time she 'Entered Into Rest' with her Lord.
She loved her Lord, gardening, sewing, homemaking and especially her far flung family. She was treasurer of the Ohl Family Reunion for over 40 years and was part of the committee that worked hard in setting up a scholarship fund for their own young people, to encourage them to attend reunion and further their education in whatever field they chose. There have been 47 scholarships given over the years.
She is survived by a daughter E. Joan Deal-Haun and her husband, Jack of Warren. A son, John A. 'Jack' Deal, who made his home with her, and he and his sister cared for her there, a granddaughter, Elena Marie (John) Dawson, a great granddaughter, Emily Caitlyn Dawson of Tampa, FL, and a foster sister, Virginia Mae Ohl Kata of Liberty, OH.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Olive O. Rodgers and Hattie May Ohl; and three brothers, Lloyd E. Ohl, William E. Ohl and Fred Albert Ohl.
A memorial service will be held at The Salvation Army Citadel, 270 Franklin St. SE, Warren, OH on Sunday, July 23, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. with Majors Robert and Ruth Baker, Ret. officiating.
A graveside Committal Service will be held at Crown Hill Burial Park, 3966 Warren-Sharon Rd., Vienna, OH on Monday, July 24, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with Major Jack Haun, Ret. officiating.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to Ohl Family Scholarship fund, Mary Liming, Treasurer, 3840 Austintown-Warren Rd. Mineral Ridge, OH 44440; or The Salvation Army, 270 Franklin St. SE, Warren OH 44483.
Much assistance has been given by McFarland & Son Funeral Services, 271 N. Park Avenue, Warren OH and Crown Hill Burial Park, 3966 Warren-Sharon Rd., Vienna OH.
