Alfred R. Hughes II, 79, of Warren, died 2:10 PM Monday, April 11, 2005 at home. He was born Wednesday, October 21, 1925, in Cleveland, the son of the late Raymond Edwards and Elizabeth Camp Pond Hughes.
Al was a 1944 graduate of the University School in Cleveland and attended Youngstown University. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Al was a professional musician and composer. He had played in the Tommy Dorsey Band and was owner of Hughes Music Store in downtown Warren.
Among his many community involvements were: 50 year memberships in Old Erie Lodge #3, F & AM and the Al Koran Shriners; a life member of Elks Lodge #295, the Warren Federation of Musicians, and the Warren Exchange Club; a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) since 1965; a member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution; and a former member of the Buckeye Club.
Al had served on the Salvation Army Advisory Board, the Oakwood Cemetery Board of Directors, and the Scope Board of Directors. He was a philanthropist through the A.R. Hughes Family Fund, and completed the 1984 refurbishing and re-dedication of the Warren Courthouse Band Shell. His grandfather Alfred R. Hughes had built and donated the original bandshell, and his father Raymond E. Hughes had started the refurbishing.
Other charities he established include an educational scholarship fund at the University School, and the Elizabeth Pond Hughes Memorial Fund at Trumbull Memorial Hospital, to sponsor diabetes management classes and provide financial assistance to diabetics for medications and testing equipment.
Al is survived by three children: Raymond E. (Teresa) Hughes of Atlanta, Holly P. Hughes of Houston, and Karen W. (Todd) Cologgi of Warren, with whom he made his home; two granddaughters: Jennie A. Hughes (John) Casey of Jacksonville, Ill. and Stacey (Andrew) Westbrook of Pinetop, Ariz.; and three great-grandchildren: Rusty E., Andrew R., and Skylar A. Westbrook.
Preceding Al in death are his parents; his wife, Fern Pyles Hughes, whom he married June 20, 1960 and who died April 27, 1997; his first wife, Joan Wood McKinney Hughes, who died February 10, 1958; and a sister, Mary Pond Hughes Anderson.
Services will be 1:00 PM Friday, April 15, 2005 at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, 271 North Park Avenue, Warren, Ohio 44481. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7:00 to 9:00 PM Thursday.
